In this lesson, you will read a blog about a strange local legend, learn how to describe people and things using 'has got' and 'can', and share your own mysterious stories.
Last week, I visited a small village in the north of England. It has a very famous legend. The local people believe that a ghostly woman walks on the old stone bridge every night. They say she has a secret — she can only appear when there is fog. I wanted to see if the story was true.
I walked to the bridge late in the evening. The air was cold and a strange fog started to come. I waited for an hour. Then I saw something – a white shape near the middle of the bridge. It was a woman! She had a long, white dress and she can move very quietly. I did not feel scared, but I was surprised. Was this a mystery? I don't know. Maybe it was just fog. But I will never forget that night.
The next day, I talked to an old man in the village. He said the woman is the ghost of a girl from 300 years ago. She has a sad story about lost love. He showed me an old painting of her. It was a real clue! Now I have a mystery to solve. Did I really see a ghost? I have to go back one day.
"Work with a partner. Share a mystery or strange story you have heard. It can be a local legend, a ghost story, or something unusual that happened to you or someone you know. Use the new vocabulary words like 'mystery', 'secret', 'clue', 'legend', 'believe', 'strange', and 'story'. Listen to your partner's story and ask one question."
👉 Think of a story. Describe when and where it happened.
👉 Tell the story to your partner. Use 'has got' and 'can' for descriptions (e.g., 'The old house has got a secret room' or 'The ghost can disappear').
👉 After your partner tells their story, ask them one question about it (e.g., 'What clue did you find?' or 'Do you believe the legend?').
Write a social media post (80-100 words) retelling a short legend or mystery you know. First, introduce the legend. Then describe the main person or creature. Finally, explain what happens in the story.
Record a 45-second voice note to a friend telling a mysterious story you have heard or experienced. Begin with when and where it happened. Then describe the strange event. End with your feeling about it.
